【BONBONNIÈRE DE KIJISHI】

Project : Wooden products & Branding
Company / Brand :
Concept / Product Design / Package / Logo / Catalog

The Marukindai is one of the main tools of Owari Buddhist altar fittings.
As a stand for the “orin” (bell) that produces a pure sound, the technique of carving its ornate and dignified appearance has been passed down unchanged for hundreds of years, from the Edo period to the present day.
Following this lineage, Mr. Tatematsu has been producing Marukindai for three generations, ensuring the continuation of the craftsman’s spirit and skills.
His requests primarily focused on:
・Designing everyday tools that enrich daily life, utilizing the Marukindai production techniques.
・Effective use of decorative elements such as the Saya (*1) pattern carving and the Giboshi (*2) ornament.
・Comprehensive support for strategic product development, marketing methods, and brand and design expression.
・Promotion of Owari Buddhist altar fittings through the above.

*1 Saya pattern: An auspicious pattern symbolizing permanence and longevity.
*2 Giboshi: A traditional architectural ornament found on bridges, shrines, temple stairs, and the pillars of balustrades.

“BONBONNIÈRE DE KIJISHI”, focuses on Saya pattern carvings and Giboshi as the main product, accented with layers of Saya pattern and adorned with Giboshi resembling cream, embodies the unique skills and playful spirit of Owari Buddhist altar artisan, and is versatile enough to be used as an accessory case or trinket box.
This will enhance brand communication through the product by piquing the interest of visitors at events and creating a situation where explanations are easily provided.

Also, we developed products in the food-related category.
In Mr. Tatsumatsu’s existing products, the Saya pattern was bordered, giving the impression of being somewhat “tacked-on decoration.” However, the design has been changed to one that blends the wood and carving seamlessly. Because the depth of the carving is gradual, the Saya pattern appears to emerge naturally and blends in, enhancing the natural beauty of the wood.
While fully conveying the charm of the Saya pattern, productivity and economic efficiency have also been considered by reducing the time and effort required for carving.

Furthermore, in response to the shrinking market for Owari Buddhist altar fittings and traditional crafts, the company is not simply shifting its focus to small items that conform to current trends. Rather, as a foundation for this new challenge, it is based on the premise of maintaining a high level of pride as a craftsman who possesses tradition, skill, and is the only one in Japan to manufacture and repair the Marukindai. Therefore, the logo “Marukin ni Tatematsuba” was created. The pattern, which features pine needles arranged to resemble the character “立” within a Marukindai viewed from above, represents the tradition, expertise, and rarity of Tatematsu Buddhist Altar Fittings artisans.
